Every Sunday morning after we pass the peace, Fr. Chuck assembles the children at the Chancel steps for a short session we have lovingly come to call "What's in the Box?" The Box is a small wooden treasure chest (about 9 inches by 6 inches), ornately decorated by the world-class iconographer Fr. John H. Walsted. A different child gets the box each week. The child places some object in the box with the intended purpose of sparking a short on-the-spot sermon by Fr. Chuck.
The only caveats for placing an object in the box is that it not be something living or recently dead and that it fit in the box. The resulting sermons are usually wonderful mixes of spirituality, religious teaching, and broad comedy, though not necessarily in that order. This weekly session has become so popular that many adults in the parish are waiting for their turn to put something in the box for Sunday morning. |
